Question by Ally: How do they fix giant sink holes like the one in Guatemala?

The sink whole caused by tropical storm Agatha stumps me.
Can someone explain why, exactly, this happens and how they plan on fixing/filling it?

idk it looks pretty hopeless but i think one thing they can do is try to fill it up with cement up to 300ft deep but that would be a huge job and cost alot of money but until they find a way to fix it they may have to just put a barricade around it for now

i don’t think its possible, i guess their gonna fence it off and turn it into an attraction.

The enormous amounts of heavy rain dumped on Guatemala from the Hurricane Agatha has caused land everywhere to become very soft. Get it soft enough, and if falls away, especially from sides of mountains. In this case, it likely moved the ground just enough to open what’s been about to happen for a log time. Earthquakes apparantly haven’t opened up the top of it, so just the mud being slippery enough did the trick. As far as fixing it? I doubt it! Who has the money and the time? It’s Guatemala. Not everyone is as poor as they are made out to be, but someone just lost a 3-story building. I doubt there’s that kinda money laying around to fix it. Cement is very expensive in comparison to wages. Life is tough here.
